
MR. SANATH WEERAKOON
Mr. Sanath Weerakoon is an Honours Graduate from the
University of Ceylon (Peradeniya), and later obtained his Post Graduate
Qualifications from four prestigious International Universities namely:
1. The International Institute of Social Studies - The Hague – Netherlands.
2. United Nations Asia and Far East Institute - Tokyo - Japan.
3. Hawaii University - Honolulu - U.S.A.
4. University of Ceylon – Colombo. (Law Faculty)
Mr. Weerakoon was a Senior Officer of the Sri Lanka Administrative Service
(formerly Ceylon Administrative Service) for about 33 years and was the
Government Agent (Chief Executive Head) of Colombo and Puttalam Districts
for about 14 years and presently he is the Chairman of the Urban Development
Authority of Sri Lanka.
His expertise are in the fields of Human Rights, General Administration &
Management, Human Resources Management, Social Welfare & Community Based
Rehabilitation, Rural & Urban Development, Social Defense Planning and
International Affairs.
In his Professional and Administrative career, he has held very prestigious
positions.
To name a few:
1. Permanent Secretary to the Ministry of Plantation Industries.
2. Government Agent (Chief Executive Head) of Colombo and Puttalam Districts
for about 14 years.
3. Addl. Secretary – Ministry of Security.
4. Commissioner General of Probation and Childcare Services.
5. Director-General of School of Social Work (Institute of Social
Development).
6. Director-General of Rural Development.
7. Chairman - Vocational Council of Sri Lanka
8. Chairman - Ceylon Ceramics Corporation
9. Chairman - Fair Trading Commission of Sri Lanka
10. Chairman - National Institute of Plantation Management.
11. Chairman - Environment Council of Sri Lanka.
12. Consultant - Human Rights Commission of Sri Lanka, etc.
He also held the following positions:
i. International Committee Member and Regional Representative of the Long
Term Perspective Project on ECO and Environmental Development for Asia and
Pacific Region.
ii. President of the Colombo Plan International Society.
